Budget Preparedness: My First Leatherman

Budget Preparedness: My First Leatherman
Budget Preparedness: My First Leatherman

While doing countless hours of reading and watching preparedness videos on Youtube (add Youtube link there), the most common brand in multi-tools that others used was Leatherman.  After getting my list (link to preparedness list) together of what items I had, and what I needed to purchase, I hopped my happy self over to Amazon.com (insert affliate link) and started browsing.  My, oh my, was I in for a sticker shock!

A good multi-tool is usually one of the first items on anyone’s preparedness list, mine included, so I was very disheartened at the price of the Leatherman brand.  Being on a strict budget, I couldn’t rationalize spending over 1/3 of my budget on one item, no matter how good the item was.  So I compromised.  I purchased a off brand multi-tool from a large outdoor retailer, and started saving and watching for sales for a Leatherman.  With three B.O.B.s to fill, my plan was to keep what I had and fill the others with better quality as I could.

For Christmas, my hubby bought me a Gerber multi-tool.  This is a great tool and I loved the fact that I had one more item crossed off of my list (link list again).  As fantastic as the Gerber tool is, my fingers kept typing Leatherman into the “search” bar on all of my favorite retail sites.

Last week I hit the jackpot!  After watching one of my favorite YouTubers (he was talking about the Leatherman Micra and how versatile it is and how great of a tool it is, especially paired with a larger multi-tool), I decided to check out Ebay.  Low and behold, I found a seller that was selling the Micra (slightly used) for a below half the cost of new!  SCORE!

I busted out my dusty Paypal account and hit the purchase button!

Today, my Micra arrived and I am thrilled with it!  The scissors are fantastic and I can definitely see how the reviews are positive!  I’m planning on carrying it in addition to my Gerber!  It’s small, fairly lightweight, and built to take some use!

At approximately 2.5 inches in length while closed, it’s on the small side, but it packs a large variety of useful tools.  Feature wise, the tool has:

  • Scissors
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Tweezers
  • Knife Blade
  • Ruler marks
  • Small screwdriver/ Awl
  • Bottle opener
  • File
  • Nail cleaner
  • Small O-ring for attaching to keyring etc.

Eventually I’ll purchase a couple more Leatherman tools to round out our B.O.B.s and EDC bags like the Leatherman Wave
and Leatherman Skeletool.

For now I’m ecstatic that I have great tools without breaking my budget!

First Steps Into Being a Prepper

Emergencies Happen...are you prepared?
Emergencies Happen…are you prepared?

In 2008 a major manufacturer left our area.  Soon our quiet, suburban neighborhood had many vacant homes, property values dropped drastically, and we started having an outbreak of petty thefts from vehicles.  Our once picturesque area, was becoming depressed.

My husband and I started paying more attention to the economic state of not only our area, but the country and world as a whole.  We saw how the domino effect impacted our area.

We began reading; we began to see how fragile things really are.

Even with the new knowledge, we didn’t act.  In September of 2008, Hurricane Ike blew through and left us without power for 4 days.  Our refrigerated food spoiled, we had no way to cook anything, and by the end of the outage, we were sick of PB sandwiches.

noun: preparedness

a state of readiness, especially for war.
“the country maintained a high level of military preparedness”

That’s when we really started looking into prepping.  I started reading article after article emergency preparedness.  Learning about 72 hour kits, evacuation plans, emergency first aid, et cetera, et cetera.  The hubby and I began to talk about what would we do if another Ike came through.  Things like food storage, food prep, back-up power, water storage, were topics we started addressing.  Though we were learning, we weren’t really “doing”.

In the past year, we’ve started taking our knowledge seriously, and putting the things we’ve learned into practice.

We started taking action.

This blog chronicles and documents the steps we’re taking to get back to basics, prepare for the worst, and hope for the best!

Happy St. Valentine’s Day

For Valentine’s Day this year, instead of the normal candy and cologne, I made my hubby something.  This year, I’ve started stepping up my preparedness game after doing a lot of reading and more reading over the past couple of years.

His gift this year is a handy-dandy “Altoids Tin Survival Kit”!  I made myself last month and he was impressed.  Nothing says “I love you” than a gift of preparedness!

Inside the kit:

  • 1 Standard Size Altoids Tin – container, can be used to boil water.
  • 1 large black trash bag – shelter, emergency poncho, container, water collection (Great link for more survival usage)
  • Razor Blade – cutting instrument
  • 2 safety pins – gear repair

Slightly crunchy on the outside at the top and soft in the middle.

Ingredients

  • 175g self-raising flour
  • 50g margarine
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 2 Medium eggs
  • 4 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 200g chocolate

Place the flour and caster sugar into a bowl and create a well in the middle for the other ingredients.

Mix the eggs, vanilla extract, milk and margarine and then pour it into the bowl with the dry ingredients.

Mix well until it is lump free and then break the chocolate into small pieces and add them.
Step 2
Pour the muffin mixture into a muffin tin filling each mould up to two thirds full.

Place a block of chocolate into the middle of each muffin. Then sprinkle some sugar over the top of each.

Allow to cool for at least 5 minutes before eating.

Greetings

They say that 40 is the new 30 and since I turned 41 this year, I’m grasping that mantra with both hands!  Thank you for stopping by, this is an ongoing narrative about my family’s journey of getting back to basics.  We’re taking baby steps at shedding consumerism, shedding pounds by changing our diet to more of a whole foods life, and taking steps to be prepared for whatever life and society throws at us.

We’re striving to eliminate debt, live a life of gratitude, and live a simpler life with fewer “things”.

My name is Shel Welker and I’ll be your host for this journey.  Key players that will from time to time make an appearance are my handsome hubby, Bill and our teenage daughter, Lib.
